Job Description

Hairstylists are skilled individuals that cut, trim, and style hair; they also perform other hair care-related jobs. They are employed in barbershops, hairstyling salons, spas, vocational training schools, healthcare establishments, and also in theatre and film-related organisations.


Responsibilities of Hairstylists in Canada

  • Shampoo and rinse hair for clients
  • Suggest a hairstyle compatible with the client’s physical features or determine the style from the client’s instructions and preferences.
  • Clean and style wigs and hairpieces.
  • Cut, trim, taper, curl, wave, perm, and style hair according to client instructions or preferences.
  • Apply bleach, tints, dyes, or rinses to colour, frost, or streak hair.
  • Analyze the hair and scalp condition and provide basic treatment or advice on beauty care treatments for the scalp and hair.
  • Offer hair treatment advice to clients on how they can maintain their hair.
  • May teach, train, and supervise upcoming hair stylists.
  • May book appointments and order supplies.

Job Requirements for Hairstylists and Barbers in Canada

  • Employers may require applicants to provide a hairstyling demonstration before they are hired.

  • Red Seal endorsements for hairstylists are required.
