The UK is still one of the most popular study destinations, but 2025 came with stricter visa and work rules. If you’re an international student, here’s what you need to know to stay compliant and make the most of your time.

1. Working While Studying

• Degree-level students can work up to 20 hours per week during term time.

• Foundation and language students are limited to 10 hours per week.

• You can work full-time during official breaks.

• Combining multiple jobs beyond the weekly limit is no longer allowed.

2. Post-Study Graduate Route

• The Graduate Route is still available but reduced to 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates.

• PhD graduates get 3 years.

• No job offer is needed, but you must secure a qualifying job quickly if you plan to stay longer.

3. Skilled Worker Visa Changes

• Only graduate-level jobs are eligible.

• Salary thresholds have increased to £30,960 or more for most roles.

• Dependents are not allowed unless you’re in a government-funded research program.

4. Permanent Residency (ILR)

• The time to qualify for settlement has increased from 5 years to 10 years.

• Skilled roles must meet the updated salary and eligibility criteria throughout this period.

5. University and Language Requirements

• Universities must meet 95% course start and 90% completion rates or risk losing sponsor status.

• Stricter English requirements:

• Skilled Worker visa: B2 level

• Dependents: A1 level

Conclusion

2025 means less time and stricter rules, but the UK still offers valuable opportunities for students. Plan ahead, follow the rules closely, and start your job search early to stay ahead.
